"Producer Paul Maylone
(Junkie XL, Daeva) captured every vocal inflection and each instrumental nuance
that Parsons and the players' relinquished, while Geza
X (Meredith Brooks, Dead Kennedys) offered his expertise
to the tracks. Session performances from her well-credentialed live band include
actor Dermot Mulroney playing
cello, Matt Taylor (Arthur
Yoria, Libbie Schrader, Action Cats), Joe Hauler,
Jon Parsons (Kat's brother),
guitarist Michael Chaves
(John Mayer, Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright), upright bassist Joe
Ayoub (Liz Phair), trumpeter Chris
Opperman (Steve Vai, Oppymusic), Robin
Goodchild (Sterling), Maurizio
Paura, violinist Tim Kelly,
and Johnse Holt enhance
the acoustic, pop and classical elements that Parsons summons from her lineage
and creative experience.
Recorded primarily at Rusty Tavern Studio by electronic sound guru, Dave Ward (Digital Rust, Indicia, Damnation, Gauge) "No Will Power" combines many elements of style. Other credits follow: drums and vocals and mix at Sound Moves Audio with Michael Woodrum (Prince, 2 Pak, Eric Clapton, Dr. Dre); Piano with Ramin Mirsepassi @ Studio City Sound (No Doubt, Bonnie Raitt); mastering with Nathan James at Hit Factory Mastering, NYC. It's final track, a cover of the jazz standard "Someone to Watch Over Me", was recorded using studio time that Kat won through a Songwriting Contest at Skip Saylor Recording Studios. Kat was joined on this track by Stuart Johnson on drums (Matthew Sweet, New Radicals, Cousin Lovers, Ming Tea (Austin Powers Band)), Dustin Morgan on upright bass (The Autumns, The Daniel Glass Trio) and Paul Maylone on piano. About "No Will Power":
"No Will Power chronicles the unraveling of a romantic relationship at
its every stage. It's not necessarily in chronological order. I didn't write
it with the idea that it was going to be a record. I wrote it and realized that
I needed to do a record," she laughs. "I have a new understanding
of love now."
Kat's blog about you and the album:
"I deeply appreciate your willingness that helped me make this album its
best - I am so grateful for every one of you. Every one of your pre-orders and
encouraging notes allowed this album to be the best it could be. My band, Paul
and I, and many wonderful musicians had a great time recording and are very
excited for you to hear it. And now that it is finished I am diving head first
into its promotions with a lot of success...
Side note: I played piano and guitar on the album, but did I mention that I play a gong and chimes on the record?! This is very exciting for me. Paul Maylone (producer) has made great things happen! I finally picked up the album from replication on Friday and drove home with as many thousands as I could fit in my car. As a result, my car was about 1/2 inch from scraping the road, but I drove slowly (not in my nature) as to ensure no accidents-you would be proud- especially those who responded admonishingly to my "driving" journal entry. Sorry for the run-on sentence. I am addicted to them." Kat
